Fall fun 2016: Scream Central

New to the Buffalo haunted house culture in 2016 is Scream Central, located in the former Macy’s store at Eastern Hills Mall, 4545 Transit Rd. in Williamsville. The haunt features four haunted houses.

Scream Central is open tonight, October 16, and Thursday, October 20, from 6:30-10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, October 21-22 from 7 p.m.-midnight; Sunday, October 23 and Tuesday through Thursday, October 25-27, from 6:30-10 p.m.; Friday through Monday, October 28-31, from 7 p.m.-midnight; and Friday and Saturday, November 4-5, from 7 p.m.-midnight. On Saturday, October 22, and Saturday and Sunday, October 29-30, the haunt is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. for Kids Days.

Fall fun 2016: Fright Night at Canalside

District of the Dead has a brand new setting for 2016 – Canalside Buffalo, home of the new Fright Night at Canalside. Opening night for the haunt is Friday, October 7. The new setting will feature three haunted houses and a “lights on” option for families.

The new version of the attraction features three houses: The Mine, Hotel: No Vacancy, and Queen City Horror. All ages are welcomed to visit, but it is recommended that children under age 12 be accompanied by an adult, according to the website – find out more here.

Tickets are $20 for all three haunts and can be purchased on site at Canalside (cash, credit or debit card accepted). Fright Night at Canalside is open Fridays and Saturdays throughout October from 7-11 p.m., Sundays, October 23 and 30, from 7-10 p.m. and Halloween night, Monday, October 31, from 7-10 p.m. 

The Halloween Family Fun “Lights On” tour happens Saturday and Sunday afternoons from noon-4 p.m. from October 8-30. Flashlights are provided and lights will be on during the tour, which will feature child-friendly characters and no “scares.” Admission is $7, and popcorn, face-painting and games are included – you can also enter the houses unlimited times.

Fall fun 2016: House of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs

House of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs returns for the 2016 Halloween season at a new location, Union Road Plaza, 3637 Union Rd. in Cheektowaga (behind Ted’s and Sonic). This year’s haunted attraction, which opens Friday, September 30, includes six haunted houses and, new this year, three escape rooms.

The haunted houses making up the House of Horrors and Haunted Catacombs this year include Hell House, Killer Theater, The Infected, Where Evil Dwells, The Last Ride and Mark of the Beast. The three escape room experiences are Escape the Pharaoh’s Tomb, Escape the Serial Killer and Locked in a Room with a Zombie. The houses and escape rooms are recommended for teenagers and adults, and it is suggested that children under 10 be accompanied by an adult. Find other FAQs here.

Fall fun 2016: Frightworld

Frightworld returns for its 15th season to scare Buffalonians with its unique brand of haunting on Friday, September 23. Located at 800 Young St. in Tonawanda (formerly BJ’s) for the 2016 season, Frightworld features five haunted houses spread across thousands of square feet.

Previously voted one of the best haunted attractions in the country, this Eerie Productions haunt allows visitors to explore all five haunted houses under one roof (the entire attraction is indoors). Returning this year are Grindhouse, Eerie State Asylum, Condemned, Insanity and Night Stalkers, an interactive flashlight experience.

It is recommended that children 10 and under be accompanied by an adult – find answers to other frequently asked questions here.

New for 2016, take the kids to “Light Frights With Lights” on October 29 from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Kids’ admission is $10 each, and parents are free.

Celebrate fall 2015: District of the Dead

District of the Dead has a new home for 2015 – 1881 Ridge Rd. in West Seneca – and a new haunted experience where you get to choose your own fate – twice. Opening night for the haunt is Friday, October 2. A portion of the profits from this year’s haunt will benefit Make-A-Wish.

In 2015, District of the Dead features the haunt Quarantine: Reloaded. Quarantined: Reloaded tells the story of underground biological experiments gone wrong, but the twist is that you choose your own escape route. Not happy with the results? You can go through twice – each time with different starting and ending points.

All ages are welcomed to visit District of the Dead, but it is recommended that children under age 12 be accompanied by an adult, according to the website – find out more here.
