Five Things to Do in November 2014

credit: freedigitalphotos.net/Naypong
Check out HARBOR CENTER – the Pegulas’ latest addition officially opened on October 30th, when Tim Hortons opened its doors, and the ice was broken in on October 31st with the Canisius College/Ohio State game, but there’s plenty going on in November – another Canisius/Ohio game on November 1st, the HARBOR CENTER Cup U16 and U18 tournaments through November 2nd and the debut of the Buffalo Junior Sabres on November 4th.

Get your holiday shopping in gear – before Black Friday, there’s plenty of shopping to be done. Check out the Clarence Holiday Arts and Crafts Show November 1st and 2nd, Christmas in the Country at the Hamburg Fairgrounds November 6th through 9th and Shea’s Shopping Soiree on November 20th. Still looking for more? There’s Christmas in Ellicottville November 28th through 30th (that’s Black Friday weekend).

Get ready for Santa – yes, Buffalo, it’s that time of year already. Santa arrives at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum on November 29th, but I’m sure he’ll show up at a mall or two before then.

Visit the Buffalo History Museum – the brand new Tim Russert exhibit is open, and the Museum is hosting the 16th annual Paint the Town fundraising event on November 6th. M&T Third Friday takes place November 21st, and November 28th is Train Day at the Museum.

Check out the baby giraffe at the Buffalo Zoo – the new cutie and his parents will have some down time while they get adjusted to each other (first-time parents and all), but you’ll be able to see them through the windows of the giraffe house. If you’re a military member, you and up to four guests will be admitted to the Zoo for $5 on November 11th (Veterans Day).

Purple Mums and a Corpse Flower: A Trip to the Botanical Gardens

One of my favorite places in Buffalo is the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, especially when they’re having a flower show. This time around, the showcase is one of fall’s favorite flowers, the mum.

But there’s a special guest at the mum show.

I didn’t make it to the Gardens while their original corpse flower, Morty, was in bloom in August (read about it here), I did get a chance to see Morty’s sibling – I’ll call it Morticia, because that’s what I voted for in the “name the new corpse flower” contest the Gardens is holding (and because I’m all about the Addams Family).

The Gardens purchased three corpse flower tubers in July from a nursery in Massachusetts – Morty has bloomed, while Morticia has a tree-like leaf structure. They only bloom - its stinky flower smells like rotting flesh - once every six to 10 years (that’s probably a good thing). Learn more about the corpse flower in this piece from the Gardens’ website.

Yep, it is that big.

But back to the mums. They’re absolutely beautiful, and the colors are so vibrant (especially the purple ones - my favorite color!). I can’t help but take more pictures than I really should (because then I have to go through and just pick out a few to show you!).

Reinvention…Buffalo Sports Style

Once again, Buffalo and its surrounding suburbs – and ex-pats around the country and the world, for that matter – are basking in the glow of Pegula-mania. Terry and Kim Pegula , owners of the Sabres for a few years now, now own the Bills as well, and in essence become the most powerful couple in Buffalo.

credit: bills-backers.com/97Rock.com
This is not a bad thing.

The Pegulas, the Sabres and the Bills are all a vital part of the reinvention of Buffalo: the city is changing, growing, rebuilding – and so are our sports teams. Reinvention, growth, change, constructions – they all come with some growing pains, and it can take what seems like a long time, but it can all be worth it in the end.

The Pegulas share a vision with many of us for Buffalo, and they have shown their love for the Queen City by creating: jobs, revenue, places to go and things to do. They are also the epitome of the Buffalo dream: start small, work hard, become successful. They’ve become successful enough that they’re now trying to help our area recognize a couple of other dreams: championships for out hockey and football teams.

In Buffalo, we’re used to rough rides, be it in sports, the weather or the economy. But we get through it, and we’re stronger for it. Some people refer to Buffalo as a drinking town with a sports problem – if that’s the case, raise your glass to the Pegulas, sit back, strap in and enjoy the bumpy ride.

It’s Tricky: NASCAR at Pocono Raceway

I know a lot of people think Pocono Raceway is a has-been, needs fewer races, needs to be gone – I’m not one of those people.

Kasey Kahne on pit road
I love this place! I’m not sure if it’s because of all the racing – of course, the Truck Series race at Pocono is pretty awesome! – but it’s definitely because of the pit/paddock pass.

Jennifer Jo Cobb in "The Zoo"
Head over to the garage area – which I refer to as “The Zoo” – and watch the teams prep the cars; sometimes you get lucky and find a driver or two.

Dave Blaney
Head out to pit road and watch your favorite drivers wheel around the 2.5-mile “Tricky Triangle.”

Tony Stewart
Head back to the garage area and see the cars going through tech.

The tech area
What’s really cool about the pass is the price - $50 for the weekend (plus your grandstand tickets).

That’s right – three days of getting that close to the action. There are other tracks that offer pit/paddock passes, but not for that price.

How close to the action can you get? Here are some more photos from this August:

Fall décor: Deco Mesh Pumpkin

I became fascinated with deco mesh last year at Christmas, because Hobby Lobby had a WHOLE AISLE of the stuff. Then I started experimenting with it, and it ended up as bows on my outside light fixtures, and garland on one of my Christmas trees (again, yes, I said “one of”).

This year, the fascination continued, to the point where Mom and I decided to buy a book of wreaths and other projects (Leisure Arts’ Learn to Make Deco Mesh Wreaths). One that caught my eye was a pumpkin made using a wreath form – I’m more of a “fall” decorator than a “Halloween” decorator, so the pumpkin was nice and neutral.

I used:
  • 16” diameter wire wreath frame wrapped in orange (it’s available at Hobby Lobby in the “fall” section – regular price $6.99)
  • 30-foot roll of 21” wide orange deco mesh (used about 20 feet)
  • 5-1/2” wide brown or lime green deco mesh (I used brown and about 2-1/2 feet for bow)
  • 1-1/2” wide autumn-inspired wire edged ribbon (I used brown/green/cream metallic and about 2 feet for bow)
  • Brown or orange chenille stems (“pipe cleaners” when I was growing up!) – 2 to 3

Directions:

1. Cut a 50” length of orange deco mesh and wrap around frame; gather ends at top and secure with chenille stem (leave loose – you’ll be adding more to it).

2. Cut a 65” length of orange deco mesh and secure one end at top of pumpkin in same chenille stem. Wrap the deco mesh around the outside edge of the frame, and secure other end at top in chenille stem.

3. Cut two more 50” lengths of orange deco mesh. Wrap one length around frame as in step one, but favoring the left side of the frame; secure at top with chenille stem (you may need to use another one by now). Use the second length and do the same, favoring the right side of the frame; secure at top with chenille stem. Arrange the folds and openings to look “pumpkin-like” – you may want to use pins or glue to hold in place.

deco mesh completed

4. Make a deco mesh bow using brown or lime green deco mesh for placement at the “stem” on top – I made a simple quad-loop (four-loop) bow and held it together with another chenille stem while I made a second quad-loop bow out of the wire edged ribbon. I placed the two bows together in the chenille stem and attached it to the “stem” of the pumpkin.

hanging on my front door
I think I might trim some of the top "stem" down - I cut the deco mesh a little longer than I needed since the original instructions called for a 20" wreath frame and mine was a 16" frame.

Add Flavor to your Alfredo with Litehouse Food

Remember all those awesome herb samples I received from Litehouse Food? I checked out their website and they had a bunch of recipes in addition to those Fruit and Herb Popsicles I sample this summer. One that really caught my eye was an herb-seasoned alfredo sauce – and you begin with sauce in a jar!

I once again improvised, but the result was still delish – make jarred sauce a little more special by adding a mix of herbs!

credit: paulathompsonfreelance.com

Perfect Pasta Alfredo (adapted from Litehouse Foods):
  • 6 ounces cooked linguine
  • 1/2 jar alfredo sauce of choice
  • 1 tblsp. Litehouse Instantly Fresh Italian Herb Blend
  • 1 tblsp. Litehouse Instantly Fresh Basil
  • Fresh grated parmesan cheese
  • Grilled chicken breast (I used Perdue Short Cuts)

Mix and heat alfresco sauce and herbs in a saucepan until heated through. Pour over cooked linguine and mix gently. Top with chicken and parmesan cheese.

September 2014 in review

As I posted in my August review, the month of September began with the Ponies at a car show – and as usual, that wasn’t the only auto-oriented fun of the month! Thankfully, things are slowing down, however – of course, that also means summer is over :(
  • September 1st – car show at St. Gregory’s
  • September 6th – the Succulent Show at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens

  • September 13th – a trip out to Route 20 Ice Cream

  • September 19th and 20th – the U.S. Open at Lancaster Raceway Park

Yeah, I was THAT close!

The U.S. Open was supposed to be completed on Sunday, September 21st – thanks to the weather, it didn’t happen…and still hasn’t…

Sports = Emotion

It’s taken me nearly a week to write this piece, because 1) I haven’t had time and 2) I still don’t want to believe it’s over.

The Core 4: Rivera, Jeter, Pettitte and Posada
paulathompsonfreelance.com
I’ve been a New York Yankees fan since the days of Don Mattingly and Wade Boggs – definitely NOT the best of times – but the last 20 years have been my “mega-fan” days. Now, it’s all over.

I grew up with the Core 4 – Posada, Rivera, Pettitte and Jeter – and when I say “grew up” I mean it: they’re all around my age. Jorge Posada went first, although it wasn’t a big party like the others got. Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte both left the game last year, and both went out in storybook fashion – Rivera with a season-long celebration and Pettitte with one final game in his hometown of Houston that was nothing short of epic, a complete game win by a pitcher who hadn’t pitched a complete game since 2006. When Derek Jeter announced that 2014 would be his last season, everyone knew it, too, would be epic.

Like Rivera, it was a season-long celebration – and the end of what might be the best baseball career I will ever see in my lifetime.

On Thursday, September 25th, Jeter took the field at Yankee Stadium one last time, going out with class, humility and the storybook ending that only the Yankees could produce. That night, his final game in the Bronx ended with one final hit from baseball’s Captain Clutch – a walk-off single that sent Ichiro home for the win. When the sea of current teammates parted, he was greeted by a line-up of men who had seen him through his greatest moments – Mo, Andy, Posada, Bernie, Tino and “Mr. T.”

On Sunday, September 28th, he wrapped up his career against the Yankees archrivals and bitter enemies, the Boston Red Sox. The BoSox honored one of the best in baseball with one of the most respectful and classy ceremonies of the season, and the fans in attendance honored a player who was loved by many and “hated” by Bostonians (I say “hated” because they would’ve loved him in a BoSox uniform) with cheers and tears. Again, one final hit landed Jeter on first base, and his decision to end it there brought Brian McCann in as a pinch runner and brought Jeter one step closer to Cooperstown.

Yeah, I cried – I’m a sappy fan that way. I cried for Mo, I cried for Andy, I shed a tear in Cleveland when I saw Jeter play for the last time. But I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who shed a few tears.

Thanks for the memories guys.
